HANDS Percussion Returns with OPIUM, A First Site-Specific Production in July 2016
HANDS first site-specific performance, OPIUM, symbolically represents fragmented memories of a dark but endearing past. While a creative challenge for HANDS it will be an open more interactive experience for audiences. There are 3 simultaneous performances at 3 sites. Divided into 3 groups, audiences are expected to walk from one to the other in no particular order. A finale will conclude the show in the outdoor space of the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC).
The memories that inspired OPIUM revolve around the unexpected influence of a patriarchal figure. Unexpected because even with challenges and conflicts in many aspects of a life it influenced another in making positive choices. Positive choices led to shaping a positive outlook on life, a message behind the choices made and presented in OPIUM.
Combining his love for culture rich France which is strongly interconnected to those fragments of memories, Bernard Goh, Artistic Director of HANDS Percussion leads this group of local and international artists from France in an artistic expression of perspective and choices.
Bernard says “This collaboration has brought about an unexpected view of life. It has made me realize that your own perspective of life is how you survive. How you stay happy!”
From Malaysia are Bernard Goh, Js Wong Jyh Shyong (Dance), Ong Chia Koon (Calligrapher), Joe Chia (Fashion Designer), Yuan Leow Yunn(Arranger), Gideon Alubakhan Chen (Guitarist), Howz – Iam ABanana(Musician), Azli – Azleey Tasleem (Accordionist), Muji Lee Mok Yee(Installation Artist) and Hands Percussion.
